 THE DORDOGNE
The department of the Dordogne is called after the river the Dordogne, in the “Périgord Noir”. This is one of the most beautiful and beloved regions of France. Between the rivers of the Dordogne and the Vézère the landscape is very beautiful. The countryside is hilly, with forests of oak, good agriculture and is dotted with sandstone houses. It has many beautiful views, with lovely historical towns like Sarlat and Domme and many impressive castles. It also has lots of historical caves, making the whole of this region a very attractive holiday area. Because of the mild climate you can enjoy your holiday from early spring until late autumn.
You can explore the region by foot (there are many walks to enjoy), by bicycle (the use of your gears will be necessary), by canoe on the Dordogne or the Vézère rivers (you can also swim and sunbathe) or just sightseeing by car. As far as eating is concerned, the Dordogne is famous for its local cooking with specialities like “foie gras”, truffles and walnuts.
